The Benjamin F. Smith collection contains the special orders issued by or during Smith’s command of a Civil War military training camp at Fort Snelling. Furthermore, it includes pay rolls, muster rolls, special orders, and financial records dating from his service as commander of the militia for Blue Earth County in the Dakota Conflict.

The newspaper's information covered issues related to the Mankato area. Furthermore, the paper contained numerous articles about Minnesota State Senator Val Imm who coincidently served as the paper's publisher, editor, and owner between 1927 and 1958.

This collection consists of research notes and a paper written by Mark R. Winter. The paper is entitled “A Study of a Big Woods Township: Le Ray Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota.” The paper was written in 1977 as part of the requirements for Historical Geography, an undergraduate course at Mankato State University. Handwritten research notes, maps, photocopies of newspaper articles, and the twenty-three-page research paper are all included in the collection.
