Scope and Contents

The Anna M. Wiecking and Family collection consists of documents, pictures, and articles written by Anna Wiecking. Furthermore, items related to Mankato State College address the retirements of two faculty members, various miscellaneous documents, and the graduating classes of 1907 and 1910.

The collection includes educational articles published by Wiecking in several different publications, some unpublished reminiscences of the Mankato area, and newspaper clippings about Mankato State College. Wiecking included extensive family histories, sewing samples from her years as a college student, and a typed copy of her family’s vacation to Montana in 1917. In addition, this collection contains information on Gilbert Fletcher and Maud Hart Lovelace both famous Mankatoans. Two retirement speeches given by Wiecking for Signe Sletten and Cora Sletten are included. There are photos of the entire graduating class of 1907, the students involved with kindergarten education in 1910, and the 50th anniversary for the class of 1907.

Biographical / Historical

Anna M. Wiecking, (1887-1973) was a teacher at Mankato State College from 1917-1956. She was born in Mankato, Minnesota on 6 December 1887, and received a two-year diploma from Mankato Normal School. Wiecking earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, her master’s degree in education from Columbia University in New York in 1915, and her doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1933. She was active n the Blue Earth County Historical Society and wrote numerous articles for newspapers on Blue Earth County history in addition to writing two books, titled The History of Blue Earth County and As We Once Were, for elementary school children. She died on the 23 November 1973 in Mankato.
