Abstract

This collection contains the personal diary of Edwin Newton Hosmer. The diary contains information regarding Hosmer's activities during his military enlistment in the Civil War with Company D, 1st Battalion, Minnesota Infantry in 1865. Hosmer described his experiences and opinions about the war and his absence from home. In addition, he wrote about his train and boat travels during his enlistment along with his experiences in victory parades. The diary ends with his muster out exercises in July 1865.

Biographical / Historical

Edwin Newton Hosmer was born at Logansport, Indiana in 1842. The Hosmer family moved to Watertown, Minnesota between 1857 and 1865. In March 1865, he enlisted in the Union army, and on 14 March, he was mustered into the Company D, 1st Battalion, Minnesota Infantry. He remained in the military until July 1865. Hosmer died on 3 June 1916 in Lamberton, Minnesota.
