Abstract
This collection consists of the correspondence of Carl August Johnson Sr. (“Gus”), formerly of Mankato, Minnesota. Johnson worked as a teacher and lawyer for many years in the communities of Mankato and Lake Crystal. Johnson also served from 1962 until 1972 in the Minnesota House of Representatives. This collection consists of his correspondence from his time in the Minnesota House. Some topics discussed in the letters include abortion, transportation of school children, and tuition reimbursement plans.

Biographical / Historical
Carl August Johnson Sr. (“Gus”) was born in August of 1893 in Lake Crystal, Minnesota. He graduated from Lake Crystal high school in 1913, attended Hamline University and Mankato Normal School, and taught in Lake Crystal school. Johnson served in World War I and completed the University of Minnesota Law in 1920, when he was admitted to the Minnesota Bar. He was City Attorney for Lake Crystal, 1924 – 1931, and Blue Earth County Attorney, 1931 – 1939. In 1951 Johnson established a law firm with his son Charles in downtown Mankato. Johnson was a member of the Minnesota State and American Bar Association. He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1962, and served until 1972, when he was defeated in his bid for reelection by David Cumminsky. Johnson returned to the practice of law following his stint in the House of Representatives. His firm of Johnson, Johnson, Anderson, Moonan and Bradshaw had offices in Mankato and Lake Crystal at the time of Carl Johnson Sr.’s death in May of 1977.
