Abstract

The Edward W. Shannon collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Shannon and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. Shannon was drafted into the Army during World War II and later enlisted in the Army Reserves. He talks about his time in the service, experiences overseas, and his job in Communications. Shannon was discharged after World War II as Staff Sergeant in the United States Army.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Edward W. Shannon was born in Baker, Oregon in 1927. He grew up there and in 1945 was drafted into the Army at the end of World War II. While in the service Shannon traveled around the United States working in Communications and was then sent to Korea for 10 months. He then came back to the United States, traveled a little more and in February 1947 was discharged from Fort Lewis, Washington. In 1947, Shannon came to Minnesota and started school at Mankato State College. While attending school he joined with a local unit called the 330th Army Band. They decided to go on active duty and in1950 were sent to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin for 19 months. When they returned to Mankato, he was discharged. Shannon taught school for 4 years in Mankato and then moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota. He worked for Olson Manufacturing for 20 years and has been working with the Albert Lea Tribune for the last 18 years. Shannon is a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Disabled American Veteran’s.
