Biographical / Historical
The literary societies were groups on campus that met every other week to discuss literature. The Normal Literary Society, for example, met every other Friday night in the main assembly room.
The Mask and Dagger Club usually directed the one-act plays on campus. The Mask and Dagger Club was a drama club, but did not do as much acting, which was left to the Workshop group on campus. Mask and Dagger was considered more professional than the Workshop group.
The Country Life Club was a group of junior and senior students who majored in elementary education. This group met to discuss the homes, schooling, and activities of those who lived in South America.
The Glee Club was for women, and to be a part of this group, girls had to audition for the director. This group was made up primarily of juniors and seniors. They held rehearsal once a week.
The Dramatic Club held tryouts to be a member. Twice a semester, the group would get together to discuss William Shakespeare. They held a social once a month, usually after performances. This group also put on plays for the school.
The Veterans Club was organized for all veterans of World War II, men and women alike, for the express purpose of furthering better understanding between the veterans and the rest of the college and for the knowledge of, interpretation of, and the action on veteran’s benefits. Dues were one dollar per year, and they met twice a month. You did not have to be a student to be a part of this club.
There is no extra information about the Rhetorical Programs, or the Normal School Debate Club at this time.
Information obtained from the Mankato State Normal School and Mankato State Teachers College catalogs, as well as from the year book, Katonian, for different years of the groups.
