Biographical / Historical

Martin Mitchell and Paul Dobratz undertook a re-photography and comparative landscape study in 1996 based on the same road trip taken by George J Miller in 1936. Mitchell used Miller’s field diary and photographs to retrace Miller’s footsteps as closely as he could. Mitchell visited and photographed 58 of the same 60 sites that Miller photographed. He explored how the cultural and physical landscape had changed in the sixty years since Miller’s initial visit to those locations.

Martin (Marty) Mitchell was a professor of Geography at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 1993 until he retired in 2025.

George J Miller was a member of the Mankato Normal School/Mankato State Teachers College faculty from 1913 until 1948.

This collection features documents and photographs relating to former Minnesota State University, Mankato Geography professor Martin “Marty” Mitchell. The collection revolves around Mitchell’s 1996 trip from Kansas to New Mexico, following the same route taken by George J Miller in 1936.
