The Eleanor B. Thayer Collection consists primarily of teaching contracts from her time working in Minnesota between 1891 and 1894. The collection also includes a jar donated by Eleanor B. Thayer Mowry to Alumni Affairs. The jar contains an image depicting both the Mankato Normal School and a log schoolhouse built in 1845.

Biographical / Historical

Eleanor B. (Thayer) Mowry was born on March 30, 1869, in South Lima, New York. She attended Mankato State Teachers College from 1886 to 1889, graduating with a degree in Education from the Advanced Course. Following graduation, Eleanor taught school in Blue Earth County and later in Murray County, both in Minnesota. She married in 1895, and the couple had two children, Frank and Russell. In 1902, Eleanor moved to Seattle, Washington, where she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She passed away in 1958.
