Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of photographic slides which have a large emphasis on urban architecture, spanning many different architectural styles and generations. Cities across Minnesota were photographed, including Minneapolis, St. Paul, Mankato, Albert Lea, and Le Sueur.

Biographical / Historical

The slides in this collection were primarily donated by H. Roger Smith, a former Geography and Urban and Regional Studies professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Born in 1936 in Dover, Ohio, Smith would go on to earn multiple degrees from Michigan State University, Pratt Institute, and Harvard before moving to Mankato to teach Geography. Smith was instrumental in the creation and development of Minnesota State Mankato’s Urban and Regional Studies Institute (URSI) and was known for his student-led community projects. This collection of photographs of cities, staff and students were taken in large part by Smith himself or students in his classes and depict architectural styles, historic preservation issues, and urban renewal.

Abstract

The Urban and Regional Studies Institute Photographs of Minnesota Collection consists of photographic slides of Minnesota cities and Minnesota State University, Mankato Urban and Regional Studies faculty and students. While most of the collection centers around the Twin Cities, there are photographic slides from different towns and cities across the state of Minnesota.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

H. Roger Smith donated the bulk of this collection in 2012 and Missy Manderfeld of the Urban and Regional Studies Institute donated the remainder in 2013.
