Scope and Contents

The Mahkato Wacipi was initially called the Mahkato Indian Pow Wow and the name was changed to Wacipi sometime in the 1990s. Both Pow Wow and Wacipi will be used in the Collection Guide

Biographical / Historical

The Y’s Men Club of the YMCA, along with Amos Owen and the Minnesota Intertribal Sioux Council, sponsored the first Indian Pow Wow in Mankato in 1972. Members formed the Greater Mankato Area Pow Wow Committee, sponsored initially by the Mankato Chamber of Commerce, to organize the Pow Wow. The Mahkato Mdewakanton Club was formed in 1977 to promote and preserve the culture of the American Indian including educational activities and organizing the Pow Wow. The Mahkato Mdewakanton Club incorporated with the State of Minnesota in 1983 and reincorporated as the Mahkato Mdewakanton Association in 1998.

Abstract

The Mahkato Mdewakanton Association Collection consists of organizational records, club minutes and by-laws. The Association organizes the Mahkato Wacipi and there are also posters, memorabilia and programs related to that event.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Bud Lawrence donated part of this collection in 2011 and Jayne Larsen donated additional materials to this collection in 2017.
