Biographical / Historical

The Mankato Kiwanis Club was founded on February 19, 1921 as the 520th club within Kiwanis International. It was the first service club in Mankato, Minnesota. The club was chartered with 90 members and has maintained an average club membership of around 100 since then. The Mankato club supports the Kiwanis International values of helping kids around the world.

The Mankato Kiwanis club is dedicated to serving the Greater Mankato Community. Some of their signature events have included: Kiwanis Camp Patterson, Kiwanis Holiday Lights, Kiwanis Thunder of Drums, and Kiwanis Reading Oasis. The Mankato Kiwanis Club has also dedicated many volunteer hours to other community projects and needs. They have provided many scholarships to area high school and college students. Fundraisers to support these events and activities have included: peanut day, travelogue series, Russ Sparks Golf Outing, Pancake Breakfast, a circus, and much more.

The Mankato Kiwanis club has sponsored new Kiwanis clubs over the years and for a time there were multiple clubs in the area. This resulted in the Mankato Club being known as the Downtown Mankato Kiwanis Club for some time.

The Mankato Kiwanis club is active in sponsoring Service Leadership Programs as a way of promoting the objects of Kiwanis. This includes sponsoring Builders Clubs (Dakota Meadows, Prairie Winds), Key Clubs (Mankato Loyola, Mankato East, Mankato West), Circle K (Minnesota State University, Mankato), and Aktion Clubs (Theatre and Pathstone Living.)

The Mankato Kiwanis Club is in Division 6 of the Minnesota-Dakotas District of Kiwanis International. Over the years, many Mankato Kiwanis members have served in District and International roles such as Lt. Governor, Governor and International Trustee.
