Biographical / Historical

Soon after Minnesota ratified the 19th amendment in 1919, the Minnesota Suffrage Association dissolved and became a branch of the League of Women Voters (LMV).(“Our History,” League of Women Voters of Minnesota, accessed December 4, 2020. https://www.lwvmn.org/our-history)

According to a November 2020 Mankato Free Press article, Blue Earth and Nicollet counties started their own chapters of the LWV in the 1920s. Participation varied over the years, but the groups became more active in the 1960s and again in the 1990s. The Mankato Area chapter disbanded in 2009, when the last president moved to Duluth.(Lynn Solo, Glimpse of the Past: League of Women Voters has long history in area. Nationally, the League was founded in 1920 by the suffragists of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. February 14, 2020, marked the 100th anniversary of the League. The focus of the organization is on election protection, democratic reforms, and equal access to the ballot—while maintaining a commitment to nonpartisanship and fostering an informed electorate.( League of Women Voters, History. https://www.lwv.org/about-us/history)
