Scope and Contents

This collection consists of items pertaining to John Agar Hartle, of Owatonna, Minnesota. Included in the collection is his legislative correspondence (1951 - 1970), legislation and bills (1961 - 1963), undated notes used for speeches, items pertaining to Minnesota Republican Party activities (1952 - 1960), campaign material (1946 - 1962), newspaper chppings (1945 - 1976), and items from Hartle's service as a Minnesota delegate to the 1956 Republican National Convention. An oral history interview conducted with Hartle is also part of the collection. In this interview, Hartle discusses his family background and his positions on various issues that were important during his time in the Legislature.

Biographical / Historical

John Agar Hartle was bom in 1892 on a farm near Owatonna, Minnesota. Hartle was a lifelong farmer who farmed 800 acres and raised purebred hogs and Holstein cattle. He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1935 until 1968, as speaker from 1949 to 1953, and was never defeated in running for office. As chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party, Hartle attended the 1952 and 1956 Republican national conventions as a Minnesota delegate.

John Hartle died in April of 1979.

Abstract

This collection consists of items pertaining to John Agar Hartle, of Owatonna, Minnesota. Hartle served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1935 until 1968. Included in the collection is Hartle's correspondence, legislative materials, items pertaining to Hartle's role in the Minnesota Republican Party (including letters from Harold Stassen and Richard Nixon), campaign materials, and other memorabilia from his time in the House of Representatives. Also included in the collection is an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and a transcript of an interview with Hartle, conducted in 1977. In the interview, he discusses his family background, and mostly about his position on issues during his time in the Legislature.
