Scope and Contents
This collection consists of items pertaining to Julian Adolf Hielscher, a physician from Mankato, Minnesota. Included in the collection are various research papers written by Hielscher during high school and college, and others written and presented to the Laconian Literary Society and the Cliosophic Society. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings that cover events throughout Hielscher's life, including his years of
practice in Mankato, his wife's role in founding the American Legion Auxiliary, and other various events. Correspondence between Hielscher and his wife during World War I is also included in the collection. Most of these communications are handwritten letters,
but some are postcards from France.
Also included in the collection are photographs and other memorabilia. The photographs are of the Hielschers, the people Dr. Hielscher encountered in World War I, and other various friends and relatives. The memorabilia included in the collection also originates in World War I France, and includes postcards and other items obtained from the French people, and from German prisoners.

Biographical / Historical
J. A. Hielscher was bom near the town of LeCenter, Minnesota on October 21, 1864. He graduated from Northwestem College in Naperville, Illinois in 1888, and from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1891. He was also a graduate of the Rolla School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, 1912. He practiced medicine in Mankato, Minnesota until the 1940s. He served in the U.S. Army in France during World War I, and was active in community organizations, politics, and various businesses in Mankato. Hielscher married Dr. Helen Hughes in 1910. She also practiced medicine in Mankato, and was one of the leaders in establishing the American Legion Auxiliary in Mankato. Dr. Julian Adolf Hielscher died on October 9, 1946.

This collection consists of items pertaining to Julian Adolf Hielscher, of Mankato, Minnesota. Hielscher was a doctor, and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. The collection contains materials that relate to Hielscher's life in high school and college,as well as the time he spent in France during World War I. High school and college materials include papers written by Hielscher and photographs. Included in the items from World War I are correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and various pieces of memorabilia obtained by Hielscher while in France.
