Biographical / Historical

Harry R. Meyering was born September 4th, 1899. He received his Bachelors’ degree in 1927 from Eastern Michigan State, his Master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1934 and 1937 respectively. Before coming to Mankato State Teachers College to teach in the Division of Professional Education, Dr. Meyering taught at the Kansas City Teachers College. During Dr. Meyering’s teaching career, he was also a consultant in Turkey, Rhodesia, Cyprus and Pakistan, as well as traveled to many parts of the United States. Dr. Meyering came to Mankato State Teachers College in 1948, and in 1957, he became the Director of the Special Education department at Mankato State College. In 1957, Dr. Meyering was the first teacher to teach special education courses at Mankato State College. In 1966, Dr, Meyering, with the help of Dr. George Ayres expanded the graduate program for the training of vocational rehabilitation counseling program. Sadly, Dr. Meyering did not live long enough to see the program grow. On October 11, 1966, while teaching class, Dr. Meyering suffered a heart attack, and passed away later that evening.

In a memorial to Dr. Harry Meyering and the work he did at Mankato State College for education, there was a room named the Harry R. Meyering room on the second floor of Memorial Library. This room was eventually moved to the third floor, and after an office expansion, the room was taken out of commission. The artifacts in this collection come from this room.

This information was compiled from Dr. Harry Meyering’s folder and the Today Magazine Spring 1970 issue in the University Advancement collection, MSU ARC 200.
