Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the records of the Mankato Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). The collection is divided into series under the titles of: Projects, Internal, and Financial/Miscellaneous.

Series 1 - Projects This portion of the collection is composed of records from the various community service projects undertaken by the Jaycees. Included in this portion of the collection are records from the Mankato Track & Field competition, the Miss Mankato Pageant, the Soap Box Derby, and the Junior Tennis Program. These records include organizational proceedings, informational handouts, and promotional materials. Many of the records in this portion of the collection are under general headings such as: Environmental Concerns, Community Health, and Community Safety Projects.

Series 2 - Internal This portion of the collection contains records from the Jaycees organization itself. Included in this series are the membership and dues lists, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and plans of action for the Jaycees.

Series 3 - Financial/Miscellaneous The Jaycees’ financial records are the main component of this portion of the collection. Bank account information, insurance information, and treasurer’s reports are all included in this portion. Also included are miscellaneous papers such as programs and calendars of various Jaycees events.

Biographical / Historical

The Mankato Chapter of the Jaycees was organized in September 1934. The Mankato Chapter was affiliated with Jaycees International. The stated purpose for this group was to “allow young men to become involved with civic service in an organized effort”. Regular meetings were held at the Chamber of Commerce offices on Front Street in Mankato.

The Mankato, Minnesota Jaycees participate in many projects in the Mankato area. The Junior Track and Field Championship, Soap Box Derby, New Car Dinner, and Miss Mankato Pageant are among the events hosted by the Jaycees in the past.

For special work, individuals are recognized within the local organization with the Distinguished Service Award or the Outstanding Young Man Award. The wives of members also participate as the Mrs. Jaycees.

Abstract

This collection consists of items pertaining to the Mankato Junior Chamber of Commerce, also know as the Mankato Jaycees. This group is a service organization composed of young men (21 – 35 years old) from the Mankato area. The Jaycees are involved in a number of community improvement projects. The collection consists of meeting minutes, informational and organizational materials for the various service projects of the group, photographs, and financial records for the Mankato Jaycees.
