Scope and Contents

This collection contains both the personal and business papers of Hermann R. Wiecking of Mankato, Minnesota. Most of the collection is devoted to his business dealings, and especially the Margarita Cigar Co., which was located at several locations on Front Street in Mankato. Three volumes of the cash ledger for the Margarita Cigar Co., three volumes of his accounts book, and one volume of his daybook are included in the collection. Also included is one folder of personal papers. Most of these papers pertain to his immigration from Germany to the United States. The personal papers included consist of: Wiecking's baptism certificate (1858), his secondary school completion certificate (1875), a document permitting Wiecking to leave Osnabmck, Germany (1875), his passport (1876), and his citizenship paper from Allamakee County, Iowa (1882).

Biographical / Historical

Hermann R. Wiecking was bom on November 28, 1858 in Bramsche, Germany. His father was a tanner, and Hermann was the youngest in a family of seven children. He attended grade school in Bramsche and the gymnasium (secondary school) in Osnabmck.

In 1875 Hermann moved to the United Sates where an older brother, Wilhelm, had aheady settled. He went first to Indiana where some of his cousins lived. Later he moved to Lansing, Iowa to work with his brother Wilhelm, who was in the tobacco business.

In 1886 Hermann married Emma Kemdt who lived on a farm outside of Lansing. They moved to Mankato. Hermann established a tobacco business in Mankato, which he operated until his retirement in 1912. Hermann and Emma Wiecking had five children together. Hermann Wiecking died on July 18, 1914.

Abstract

This collection consists of items pertaining to Herman R. Wiecking, of Mankato, Minnesota. Mr. Wiecking was a successful Mankato businessman who ran the Margarita Cigar Company from about 1886 until 1912. He was the father of Anna and Emma Wiecking, who played a large role in the history of Minnesota State University, Mankato. The collection consists of seven volumes of cash and account books that were used by Wiecking in his business affairs. Also included in the collection is a folder of personal papers that belonged to Wiecking. Among these papers are his baptism certificate, school completion certificate, his passport and travel papers from Germany, and his citizenship papers from Allamakee County, Iowa.
