Scope and Contents

This collection consists of items that belonged to Lorin Cray, of Mankato, Minnesota. The collection contains newspaper clippings of the death announcements and memorials to Lorin and Lulu Cray, photographs of the Crays and their home in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, a memorial program from Nellie Cray, a niece of Lorin Cray, and a volume of a letter copying book which belonged to Lorin Cray. This volume contains copies of letters written by Lorin Cray from his law office, which deal with financial and legal matters, and date from 1900 to 1909.

Biographical / Historical

Lorin Cray was bom in New York on October 19, 1844. In 1859, he and his family moved to Shelby Township in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Cray served in the Civil War until he was discharged after being wounded. In 1875, he was admitted to the bar and began a practice in Mankato, Minnesota. He married Sarah Trimble in 1869. She died in 1890. He remarried in 1892, to Lulu Murphy. Cray and his second wife were instrumental in the advancement of the YMCA and YWCA in Mankato. Lorin Cray died on March 3, 1927. The Cray home was left to the YWCA in Mankato.

This collection consists of items pertaining to Lorin Cray of Mankato, Minnesota. Cray was a Civil War veteran, a lawyer, and a supporter of the YMCA and YWCA in Mankato. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, photographs of the Crays and their home, a memorial card for Nellie Cray, a niece of Lorin Cray, and a volume of a letter-copying book. This book contains copies of letters written by Cray on legal and financial matters.
