Biographical / Historical

Inez Clare was born on 24 June 1860 to Ezra B. and Jane Wilson Eddy in Plainview, Minnesota. On 1 October 1878, Inez Eddy married Peter Clare, who had graduated from Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Illinois. Peter Clare served the Minnesota Conference of the Methodist Church. They lived in Luverne, Minnesota where Peter Clare served as Pastor. The Clare family later moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota. In Fergus Falls, Clare left the ministry to manage the Fergus Falls Daily and later the Daily Telegram.

Clare re-entered the ministry and moved his family to North Dakota where he became the first chaplain of the House of Representatives at Bismark. The family returned to Minnesota and served in Methodist churches in Winnebago and Minneapolis. Then, the Clare family moved to Mankato where Peter Clare began presiding over the Mankato District of the Methodist Church and served six years as minister of Centenary Methodist Church in Mankato. The family left Mankato in 1909 and went to St. Paul where Peter Clare served in a Methodist church.

Peter Clare retired in 1922, and the family moved back to Mankato. Inez Clare was president of the Minnesota Conference on the Women’s Home Missionary Society and organized the Mankato branch. Peter Clare died on 19 February 1940 and Inez Clare died on 20 July 1940. They had three children; Gertrude, Mable, and Eddy A.
