This collection consists of the records of the Mankato and Minnesota Valley Chapters of the American Association for the United Nations. The records are arranged chronologically. Topics included are: correspondence, membership lists, financial records, bank statements, UNICEF records, and the group’s constitution and meeting minutes.

Biographical / Historical

The Mankato Chapter of the American Association for the United Nations was organized in 1960, as a non-profit organization, to promote the principles and purposes of the United Nations Organization. The constitution was adopted by a meeting of members on September 29, 1960. In 1963, the name was changed to Minnesota Valley Chapter, American Association for the United Nations.

The group solicited memberships for the support of their activities and those of the national organization, and sponsored activities to raise money for UNICEF. On October 23, 1961, Eleanor Roosevelt spoke at a Mankato Chapter sponsored United Nations Day dinner at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato.

Due to a decline in community interest, the organization waned in the 1960s. The last records included are from 1973.

Abstract

This collection consists of the records of the Mankato and Minnesota Valley Chapters of the American Association for the United Nations. This was a non-profit organization that intended to promote the ideals behind the United Nations. It was in operation in Mankato, Minnesota from 1960 until 1973. The collection is made up of minutes from meetings, correspondence, membership lists, and financial records of the Association.
