This collection consists of correspondence and informational materials from Arnulf Ueland Jr. of North Mankato, Minnesota. The collection covers from 1972 to 1976. The papers include informational materials and memoranda distributed to the state Senate on a variety of topics, Ueland’s correspondence, reports from Senate committees and the state Republican Party, and newspaper and magazine clippings about Ueland’s time in the state Senate. Specific topics covered in the collection include education funding, taxation, sewer improvements in Madison Lake, and the various activities of the Minnesota Republican Party.

Biographical / Historical

Arnulf Ueland, Jr. was born on June 21, 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He grew up in Minneapolis, attended Dartmouth College for two years, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943. He served in the United States Navy during his time as an undergraduate, and after graduation until November 1945. Ueland attended law school for one year after his discharge from the Navy. Ueland married Rebecca Prentiss Lucas in October of 1943. They had four children together. The Uelands moved to Mankato in 1950. Arnulf worked in a lumber mill and a lumberyard, and eventually became the owner of Ueland Lumber Sales Company in LeHillier, Minnesota. Ueland is the former mayor of North Mankato and the former Second District Republican Chairman. He was elected to the Minnesota state Senate in 1972, and re-elected in 1976.
