Scope and Contents

This collection is made up items relating to the Society of Fine Arts, Inc., which operated in Mankato, Minnesota from 1963 until 1974. Included in this collection are eleven volumes of scrapbooks. These books outline the history of the Society, but sometimes stray from chronological order. In these scrapbooks are newspaper clippings, photographs, posters, ticket stubs, and other miscellaneous items relating to the Society. The person who assembled these volumes is not identified. Also included in the collection are three folders of internal papers from the Society. These papers include membership lists, by-laws, and meeting minutes. A file of miscellaneous papers is also included. This file contains some correspondence, a photograph, and newspaper clippings, all of which are related to the Society of Fine Arts, Inc.

Biographical / Historical

The Society of Fine Arts, Inc. received certification of organization as a non-profit organization from the State of Minnesota July 12, 1963. The organization solicited memberships and raised funds from the greater Mankato area. The society issued a monthly calendar of arts activities, supported an arts center in city hall, published a magazine titled Imprint, and brought in speakers on arts related subjects. Fine Arts, Inc. established a gallery on Front Street in Mankato when space at city hall was no longer available. From that location, the society held art and craft shows, classes, and sales.

The object of the organization was to promote art, music, dance, films, and theater in the Mankato area. The Society of Fine Arts, Inc. presented concerts, recitals, films, and an annual arts festival. The organization ceased activities in 1974.
