Biographical / Historical
The Mankato Rehabihtation Center was established in 1953 by Mankato residents
interested in assisting the disabled. The initial function was to provide physical therapy,
which was done in space provided by the National Citizens Bank. The functions
expanded to include a comprehensive program of physical therapy, job placement
services, and job skill education. These functions were formalized in the move to a new
center on Honeymead property in 1958. The official programs offered at that time were
Occupational Therapy, Speech and Hearing Therapy, and Work Evaluation and
Placement Services. By 1977, the new center on Map Drive provided for expanded
services, and Sheltered Employment Service on a regional and branch basis was being
offered.
A large donation was given to the SMHC after the closure of their facilities in 2020 and the organization transitioned to 100% community based. This donation has not yet been processed but if you'd like access to those records, please contact the University Archives.
