Abstract

The Hilja Karvonen collection consists of an audio recording, biographical form, and interview outline of an oral history interview conducted between Karvonen and Mark Sheehy in November 2008. Karvonen taught at Wilson Campus School from 1964-1966. In this interview, Karvonen talks about what she did before she taught at Wilson Campus School, her experience at Wilson, and what she did after Wilson.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the Wilson Campus School Oral History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Hilja Pouei was born in Kingston, Minnesota. She attended grade school there and went to Litchfield High School, in Litchfield, Minnesota. She married Paul Karvonen in 1937. Hilja Karvonen went on to Suomi College in Hancok, Michigan, but then went to the University of Iowa for her Bachelor's degree, which she completed in 1960. Karvonen completed her Master's degree in 1963. In 1964, when she moved to Mankato, Karvonen applied to teach at Mankato State College, but instead was hired in the English department at Wilson Campus School. In 1966, Karvonen was hired in the English Department at Mankato State College. Karvonen retired in 1980.
