Abstract

This collection consists of items related to Swen Swenson, of New Sweden, Minnesota. Swenson was a lifelong farmer in Nicollet County and served one term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The collection consists of one photograph of Swenson ca. 1880s, one newspaper clipping of the obituary of Kristi Swenson (his wife), 1925, and one newspaper clipping that refers to Swen Swenson, 1905.

Biographical / Historical

Swen Swenson was bom about 1836 in Hoi, Hallingdal, Norway. His family immigrated to Minnesota in 1857. He homesteaded in New Sweden township in Nicollet County and married Kristi Paekkestad of Aal, Hallingdal, Norway in 1860. The Swensons had twelve children. Swenson was active in local affairs, and served one term in the Miimesota House of Representatives (1887 - 1889). He started the first Holstein herd in Nicollet County and helped organize the Willow Lawn Creamery and the New Sweden Creamery. Swenson died in March 1905.
