Scope and Contents

This collection contains the personal papers of August B. Mueller, a State Representative from Arlington, Minnesota. Included in the collection are correspondence, photographs, campaign literature, and a transcript of an oral history interview conducted with Mueller in 1977.

The collection is mostly made up of correspondence between Mueller and his constituents. Some of the issues discussed in these letters are highway routes, the 1971 abortion bill, use of studded tires on Minnesota highways, wildlife preservation, and banking bills that were being considered at the time.

The collection also contains newspaper articles about Mueller, his 1974 Mid-Term Report, House research material, press releases, and magazine articles about the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine copied for Mueller. Also included are campaign materials used by Mueller and photographs of Mueller at various stages of his career.

Dr. Bruce Larson conducted an oral history interview with Mueller in 1977. The cassette recording of this interview, along with a typed transcript of the session, is included in this collection. During the interview, Mueller speaks about his family background, the Mueller farm operation, highways, agricultural issues, and his long tenure in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Biographical / Historical

August Benjamin Mueller was born in Arlington Township, Sibley County on June 6, 1905. His father and family had moved to the area in the 1860s. Mueller and his brother, Edmond, operated the family farm where they raised purebred Holstein cattle.

In 1941, Mueller was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, where he would serve for thirty-four years. He chaired the Transportation Committee in the 1963, 1965, 1967, 1969, and 1971 sessions, and the Dairy Products and Livestock Committee for eight years.

August Mueller died August 18, 1996.
