Biographical / Historical

The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Mankato, Minnesota started as an auxiliary to the Young Men's Christian Association. The original goal of the auxiliary was to assist boys in the YMCA programs and activities. Eventually the goal of the auxiliary became to provide a place other than churches where the girls of Mankato could meet and participate in recreational programs. In April of 1926, the auxiliary met to start the process of organizing a Young Women's Christian Association. The Mankato YWCA incorporated in December 1926, and had twenty-five members.

In 1927, the YWCA moved into the former home of Judge Lorin Cray, who left it to the club upon his death. The YWCA's previous meeting facility was a room in the basement of the Mankato State Bank. In the new facility, young women could find room and board, and participate in the activities provided diere. Special clubs formed within the YWCA, including the Business and the Professional Women's Club the Young Mother's Club. These clubs followed the original goals of the YWCA - to enrich the community and provide a place and programs specifically for the young girls and women of the city.
