Abstract
The Ferne E. Nelson collection consists of one audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and a biographical form and interview outline of an oral history interview conducted between Nelson and Daardi Sizemore in July 2007. In this interview, Nelson talks about her family, her time as a Mankato State College student, and her experience teaching.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the Tell Your MSU Story Oral History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical
Ferne E. (Flygare) Nelson was born August 18, 1913. She graduated from Sherburn High School in 1932 and entered Mankato State Teachers College that fall. She was the only child from a family of four children that went to college. While in college she lived in Daniel Buck and sang in the Glee Club. Nelson graduated in 1934 and taught for 32 years. She also spent 14 years on a radio show reading children’s stories and songs. In 1948, she returned to college, taking off-campus, evening, and summer classes while teaching during the day. She graduated in 1962 from Mankato State College with a bachelor’s degree in education. Nelson married in 1936 and had two children. Nelson died in 2016.
