Scope and Contents

This collection contains information on a broad variety of topics, all of which Vernard Lundin was involved in. Many items have a connection to education in Minnesota, especially in the Mankato area. News releases from the Department of Education, correspondence from the Minnesota Federation of Teachers, and maps, correspondence and reports regarding Mankato State University would all fall into this category.

Other groups that Lundin was involved in were the Mankato Area Bicentennial Committee, the Region 9 Development Commission, the Sister City Program, and the Mankato Chamber of Commerce. Correspondence, reports, informational pamphlets, newspaper articles, and by-laws for these groups are also included in the collection.

Miscellaneous items obtained by Lundin are also a part of this collection. Memorabilia form his 1978 trip to China, informational pamphlets about various topics, and a historical sketch of the Alpine Attic Youth Center (ca. 1940) are all included in this category.

Biographical / Historical

Vernard Lundin was born in Mankato, Minnesota in June 1909. In June of 1933 he married Orpha Mae Johnson, and they had two children together.

Lundin was a longtime employee of the Hubbard Milling Company. His employment there lasted from 1942 until his retirement in 1974. His extended employment with the Hubbard organization led to his later authoring a book entitled The Hubbard Milling Company in 1978.

Lundin was very active in the Mankato community. He served on the school board of Independent School District #77 from 1954 until 1967, and as mayor of Mankato from 1971 until 1974. He also served on the State Board of Education from 1967 until 1970. He was also involved in local groups, including the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, and the Tri-County Fair.

Vernard Lundin died in September of 1992.

Abstract

This collection consists of items pertaining to Vernard Lundin of Mankato, Minnesota. He was involved in Mankato education groups, and served as the mayor of the city for two terms. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, and news releases from the various activities Lundin was involved in. Most of the items have a connection to education in Mankato, such as reports on utilization of Mankato State University’s lower campus area, transportation of school children, and racial integration in Mankato schools. Other miscellaneous items, such as souvenirs from Lundin’s 1978 trip to China, and informational pamphlets on a variety of topics are also part of the collection.
