The Jim E. Chalgren collection contains newspaper clippings, photographs, survey results, charts, and research papers written or used by Chalgren. Survey results indicate the predominance of homophobic and sexist language understood by students at Mankato State University (MSU). Some of the surveys were conducted in MSU’s Human Sexuality and Human Relations courses during the 1979-1980 school year. The results include bar graphs and the methodology used by Chalgren and an individual named McDiarmid to quantify the results. Papers included are “Homophobia and Sexism” by Chalgren and “Sex Differences in Homophobia in College Students” by David Almeida and Susan D. Cochran. The materials detailing Chalgren’s reign as Mr. Gay Minnesota contain photographs, newspapers and clippings, programs for Mr. Gay Minnesota, and Mr. Gay America contests. The collection
