Abstract

This collection consists of twelve volumes of account books once belonging to the Andrews and Son stores. The businesses were owned by David P. Andrews and his son Charles W. Andrews. The stores operated by the duo were located in Winona City, Minnesota, and later in Faribault. The store sold a variety of items throughout its years of existence, including paper goods, books, groceries, and hardware items. The account books contain information on what customers of the store paid for goods, and their account balances at the store.

Biographical / Historical

David P. Andrews was born in approximately 1810 in Massachusetts. In 1861, Andrews and his son, Charles W. Andrews, started a business in Winona City, Minnesota. The store sold books and stationary.

In April 1866, the business moved to Faribault, Minnesota. The store sold miscellaneous items, including paper hangings, pictures, frames, and toys. In 1871, Charles Andrews sold his share in the venture to Charles Palmer, who would in turn sell it in 1875. The business continued under the elder Andrews and an unnamed partner until the mid 1880s. The 1881 ledgers show that the business became a general store, and sold groceries, hardware items, books, and stationary.
