Abstract

The Heimark collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Dr. John Heimark and Mickey Thao in 2004. In this interview, Heimark talks about his time spent in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Schroeder during World War II as a Lieutenant. During the interview, Heimark talks about his time in the Naval Academy, life on board a destroyer, and life after the service. The collection also includes a history of the USS Schroeder as well of photographs of Heimark.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. John Heimark was born in Fargo, North Dakota on January 4, 1922 and later lived in Fairmont, Minnesota. He died in 2016. Heimark entered the United State Naval Academy in 1940 and graduated with class of 1944 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering. Following graduation he was sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to join the USS Schroeder (DD 501) where he served as a navigator and gunnery officer. Heimark resigned from the Navy as a Lieutenant Senior Grade and used the G.I. Bill to pursue a medical degree. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota. He did his internship at Stanford University and additional training at the Mayo Clinic. Heimark joined the US Naval Reserve and served in the Medical Corps at the rank of Commander. Heimark practiced medicine in Mankato, Minnesota until his retirement.
