Scope and Contents

This collection contains items relating to Mrs. Susan (Dyer) Fletcher, who was a teacher at the Mankato Normal School. The items included are: three letters to Susan M. Dyer from George M. Gage, three photographs of Mrs. Fletcher, two tintypes (c. 1868) of Mrs. Fletcher, newspaper clippings (including obituaries for both Mrs. Fletcher and her daughter), and a copy of a speech given by Mrs. Fletcher. The typewritten speech was reproduced by the Nu Chapter, and also contains some recollections of Mrs. Fletcher’s time at the Normal School. There is also a typewritten report on the Early Days in the Mankato Normal School that Mrs. Susan (Dyer) Fletcher wrote and read in 1918.

Biographical / Historical

Susan M. Dyer was born in New Sharon, Maine, February 17, 1845. She came to Mankato in 1868 to teach at the Mankato Normal School. In 1871 she married L. G. M. Fletcher. Susan Fletcher had seven children, including artist Gilbert Fletcher. Susan M. Fletcher died in Mankato May 27, 1941.

Abstract

This collection contains materials that either belonged to, or relate to Mrs. Susan Marshman (Dyer) Fletcher, (1845 - 1941). Mrs. Fletcher was a teacher at the Mankato Normal School, and this collection contains letters to her from George M. Gage, principal of the Normal school. Also included are photographs, newspaper clippings, a copy of a biographical sketch, and a speech given by Mrs. Fletcher at the fiftieth anniversary of the State Teachers College in 1918.
