Scope and Contents

This collection is made up of five folders of material. The first folder is Benjamin Hughes' handwritten speeches or lessons on religious subjects.

The next two folders contain Hughes' legislative correspondence. This includes the original letters sent to Hughes, along with copies of the reply that he sent. These letters are arranged in chronological order from January 22, 1947 to April 3, 1947.

The third folder contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and minutes of meetings relating to the funding and construction of the Mayo Memorial building on the University of Minnesota campus. This building was built to improve the facilities of the University of Minnesota Hospital.

The final folder contains newspaper clippings, campaign material, certificates of election, information relating to Benjamin Hughes' memorial service, and other miscellaneous items.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Dwight Hughes was born in Williamsburg, Iowa, on October 24, 1878. In 1888, he moved with his family to a farm in Cambria Township, where his father, the Reverend Thomas E. Hughes became pastor of Horeb Church and Bethel Church. Benjamin Hughes married Alice Davies on March 30, 1899. They farmed in Cambria until 1939, then moved to Lake Crystal, then to Mankato. Mrs. Hughes died in 1940. The Hughes had one daughter and three sons.

Benjamin Hughes served on several local boards - as public assessor for four years, a town supervisor for eight years, and a member of the school board of Blue Earth County district #11 for fifteen years. He served on the Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners from 1921-1932. In 1941, he was elected as a representative to the Minnesota State Legislature, and served until his death on April 4, 1947.

This collection contains the papers of Benjamin Dwight Hughes (1899 - 1947). Included in this collection are some of his speeches, his legislative correspondence (January 1947 - April 1947), and correspondence and printed material relating to Benjamin Hughes' work for the creation of the Mayo Memorial Building at the University of Minnesota. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings, campaign materials, certificates, and other miscellaneous items relating to Benjamin Hughes.
