Abstract

The Anne Lehman collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral interview conducted between Lehman and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. The collection also includes some photos of Lehman and an article from the Ernestine Koranda Hospital ship. Lehman served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She talks about her time in the service overseas, her thoughts about the War, and her experience as a nurse. Lehman came out of the service as 2nd Lieutenant.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Anne Lehman was born in Czechoslovakia in 1922. Her family moved to the United States when she was only six months old. After high school, she attended college at Indiana State for a year and then 3 years at Michael Reese, a nursing hospital, in Chicago and graduated in 1944. In May 1945 Lehman enlisted into the Army Nurse Corps. She attended basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin and afterwards was sent to New Orleans to board the Ernestine Koranda Hospital ship that was headed to Japan. On their way there they stopped on the island of Lati for a short while. When they reached Japan she was assigned to the 42nd General in Tokyo. While there, she met a man and was married. In September 1946, Lehman boarded the U.S.S. Monterey and returned to the United States. She worked as a nurse at St. John’s Lutheran Home for 10 years and then as an in-service director at Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center for 10 years. In 2002, she lived on a farm near Twin Lakes, Minnesota, has 2 children and 4 grandchildren. She is a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
