Abstract

The Ila J. Schmidt collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Schmidt and Kellian Clink in 2002. Schmidt served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She talks about her experience at sea, her time in Australia and the Philippines, and her job as a nurse. Schmidt was discharged from the Army Nurse Corps as 1st Lieutenant.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Ila J. Schmidt was born in Worth County, Iowa in 1919. In 1943 at the age of 24, she enlisted into the Army Nurse Corps in Northwood, Iowa. While serving at Camp Phillips, Kansas, Schmidt received the news she was being sent overseas. She sailed on the USS Uruguay for a month on its way to Australia. She spent most of her time in Australia and was also in the Philippines for a little while. In July 1945, she was sent back to the United States and in December 1945 was discharged as 1st Lieutenant. Schmidt lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota after World War II.
