The first meeting of the Minnesota Valley Mental Health Center Board of Directors took place in July 1965. The goal of the mental health centers throughout Minnesota (Minnesota Valley Center would be the twenty-second) was to provide services to discharged patients from the state hospitals, and to provide, for many patients, a more economical and efficient method of treatment than the state hospitals.

The Minnesota Valley Mental Health Center was incorporated in 1966. The organization was designed to represent Blue Earth and Le Sueur Counties. In 1977, the corporation dissolved to merge with the Blue Earth County Human Services Commission.

In August 1967, the Minnesota Valley Special Services Board was established as a subsidiary of the Mental Health Center Board, with the purpose of offering psychological services to schools and/or other organizations. The same directors served on both boards. In August 1972, meetings of the two organizations merged.
