Abstract

The Joan A. Paczkowski collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Paczkowski and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. Paczkowski served in the United States Navy WAVES right after the Korean War. She talks about her training and her time in the service. She also tells stories of memorable moments. Paczkowski spent her time in the service working in Communications.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Joan A. Paczkowski was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935 and was raised there. She enlisted into the United States Navy right before the Korean War ended and by the time boot camp was over the war had ended. She attended boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland and was then sent to the Navy Training Camp in San Diego, California where she spent the rest of her time in the service. She attended the radio school and ended up working in communications. She met a man and shortly after was married. A month later she was discharged. She followed her husband for a few years and then they came back to Albert Lea, Minnesota where they still live today. Paczkowski has been married for 47 years and has 2 sons, one who is in the Navy. She is also a member of the American Legion and the VFW Auxiliary.
