Abstract

This collection contains selected papers of the United States Senate as they pertain to the Minnesota and New Mexico Territories reproduced from the originals held by the National Archives. Documents dated earlier or later than the period of the existence of the particular territory are frequently included. The papers included relate to the constitutional prerogatives of Congress over Territories, its power to admit new States, its control of appropriations, and the right of the people to petition the government for redress of grievances. The collection primarily contains, petitions, memorials, bills, resolutions, reports from executive departments, and correspondence.
