Abstract

The Patricia J. Johannsen collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Johannsen and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. Johannsen served in the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. She talks about her time in the military, working in the hospital and the friends she met. Johannsen also talks about photographs she took while in the service. These photographs are not part of the collection.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical / Historical

Patricia J. Johannsen was born in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1945. She grew up in Albert Lea, Minnesota and while attending school in Rochester, Minnesota in 1966, enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps. She spent all her time in the service in Fort Hood Texas at the Darnell Army Hospital. While in the service, Johannsen met a military man and was married. In November 1968, Johannsen got out of the service and moved to California with her husband. They moved around for a while and in 1978 came back to Minnesota. Johannsen has two boys who are in the service; she is a member of the American Legion and the Women’s Veteran’s of Minnesota in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
