"Democracy Triumphant". Program, 1919. SMHC Manuscript Collection 1379.
Abstract
This collection consists of a program from the 1919 Fourth of July celebration in Mankato, Minnesota. The program is from a pageant presented, which included live actors and floats. The pageant traced the history of democracy from its roots in Europe to its involvement in the history of the United States. Events portrayed in the pageant include the landing of the pilgrims, the signing of the Magna Carta, Lincoln freeing the slaves, and the battle of San Juan Hill. The history of service groups such as the Red Cross, the Knights of Columbus, and the Salvation Army are also intertwined in the narrative.
