This collection consists of maps created and printed by the Geography Department at Mankato State University. The majority of the maps consists of interpretation of current data. Some of the maps illustrate historical data such as census, vegetation and railroad grants.

Biographical / Historical

The Geography Department created the Bureau of Planning and Cartographic Services as an independent business in 1979. The Bureau researched and created maps for the southern Minnesota region. It utilized current census, zoning and environmental information to create maps Mankato and the region used for planning purposes. Additionally, the Bureau researched and interpreted historical data creating maps depicting land alienation, ethnic background, vegetation and land use over time.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

MSU Academic Affairs and Mankato State University Geography Department donated this collection in May 1986 and May 1987. The Geography Department donated the remainder of the maps in May 2026.
