Scope and Contents

The Earle J. Wigley and Family collection consists of awards that Earle and Rachel Wigley were given over the years as well as photographs, and newspaper articles. Many of the articles come from Earle Wigley’s time as a coach, but there are also article about the building dedication and obituaries for both Earle and Rachel Wigley.

Biographical / Historical

Earle J. Wigley was born October 21, 1903 near Lake Crystal, Minnesota. Wigley attended Mankato High School, and went on to attend Mankato State Teachers College. Wigley married Rachel Ahlers on May 18, 1929 in Chehalis, Washington, where Wigley was teaching at the time. After teaching in Washington, Wigley went on to receive his Master of Arts in History at the University of Colorado. He returned to Mankato where he worked as a teacher, coach and principal at the Teachers College High School and at Mankato State Teachers College. While working at the College, Wigley taught in the Social Studies, History, and Physical Education Departments, as well as coaching different athletics. Over the course of their life, Earle and Rachel Wigley helped those in need, and had two foster sons. He retired from teaching in 1970, but continued to be active in different sporting events and the community. In 1979, the newly built administration building was named the Earle J. Wigley Administration Building. On September 10, 1982, Wigley passed away after fighting an illness for four months. Rachel Wigley passed away on October 11, 1998.
