Scope and Contents

The Finance and Administration Collection covers business and administrative aspects since before the founding of the Fiscal Affairs office in 1980. The Collection is arranged into four series. The first series is correspondence. The second series is budgets, records, and reports. The third series is general information. The fourth series is athletics. The fifth series is restricted information.

Correspondence, 1948-Ongoing: The coverage for this series is mostly limited to conversations and communications between Business Affairs office, Vice-President of Fiscal Affairs, Finance and Administration, and other offices around Mankato State University.

Budgets, Records, and Reports, 1937-Ongoing: This series consists of budgets, reports, and records from the Finance and Administration Office.

General Information, 1943-Ongoing: This series is conglomeration of sorted materials as well as miscellaneous files that do not fit under the rubric of any of the other series. Topics range from Academic Advisory Council minutes to the introduction of Xerox machines at the University. Though separate series exist for correspondence, reports, records, and budgets, they are present throughout this series. In an effort to maintain the original order of the collection, this series, which had been sorted alphabetically, has been left largely intact and unaltered.

Athletics, 1983-Ongoing: This series is about the Athletic department at Minnesota State University, Mankato and its predecessors, in relationship to the scholarships and building of new facilities. The Athletic department is a sub-department under Finance and Administration.

Restricted, 1966-Ongoing: Items in this series include promotion and tenure documents, improvement grants, grievances, and sabbatical leave materials. Special usage requirements exist for this series and access is granted at the discretion of the archivist.

Grants, 1988-Ongoing: This series contains project grants that were accepted and denied. This series is restricted, and special usage requirements exist for this series and access is granted at the discretion of the archivist. There is no folder level inventory for this series.

Biographical / Historical

The office that assumed responsibility of the business aspect of the University has gone through significant changes over the years. In the 1970s the Business Affairs Officer executed the duties of Financial Officer. In 1980, under the Margaret Preska Presidential Administration, Mankato State University went through an administrative reorganization. As a result, the position of Vice-President of Fiscal Affairs was created. Thomas Stark was the first person to occupy the position. In 2001 the Division of Fiscal Affairs was renamed the Division of Finance and Administration. H. Dean Trauger was the Vice-President at that time. Trauger was also the first person to hold the position under the Finance and Administration name. The current Vice-President of the Finance and Administration is Richard Straka.
