Scope and Contents

The Student Affairs collection is a very large collection that covers many years of University history. The Student Affairs collection has been divided into three series and arranged alphabetically. There is a possibility of some overlap of content for each series. Researchers are encouraged to review the entire collection. Original order has been maintained whenever possible.

Correspondence and Reports, 1988-Ongomg: The material within this series consists of incoming and outgoing written communication between Division of Student Affairs and various departments around MSU. 2019-04-03

Student Handbooks, 1928-Ongoing; The Student Handbooks were given out to students to inform the students about the policies on campus and to act as a resource for the students to turn to when they had questions.

Residential Life and Student Housing, 1931-Ongoing: The materials in this series include information about different parts of student housing and residential life, included handbooks for living in the dormitories.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, 1980-Ongoing: The materials in this series pertain to decisions made by the State Colleges and Universities board about student affairs.

Student Union, 1961-Ongoing: This series contains information about the building and upkeep on the Centennial Student Union, and the different features it offers to students.

General Information, 1916- Ongoing: Since the subject matter of this collection covers a very large time and subject range, most files remain in their original order. Subject areas in this collection range from alcohol and drug policies to meetings between MSU President and Student Affairs. Also included in this series are Margaret Healy's personal files from her time as the Vice President of Academic Affairs. There may be some duplication within the materials.

Restricted, 1986-2002: Items in this series include grievances, security issues, and discrimination issues.

Biographical / Historical

The Division of Student Affairs is an administrative office at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Its mission is to help students achieve their academic goals within a diverse community from various ethnic and minority groups, and to encourage positive relationships among both undergraduate and graduate students. The precursors to the Division of Student Affairs were the Dean of Women, created in 1910 under Alameda May Janney and the Dean of Men, created in 1924 under Maurice Nelson. Nelson held the posting until 1959 when the position was dissolved. The Dean of Women was dissolved in 1962 under Maria Bruce. The office of Vice-President of Student Affairs was created in 1968 under David Hess. Student Affairs continues to this day to help students obtain their educational goals. The current Vice President of Student Affairs is David P. Jones (as of 2024).

Abstract

The Student Affairs collection consists of items from the Student Affairs Division at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Division of Student Affairs has included the departments of Athletics, Campus Recreation, Career Development, Counseling Center, Centennial Student Union, First Year Experience, and the offices of the Registrar, Admissions, Residential Life, Security, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Health Services, Student Leadership and Service Learning, Women's Center, Office of International Students, and the office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender. The Collection consists of meeting minutes, reports, agendas, correspondence, surveys, reviews, brochures, guidelines, policies, objectives and proposals. The collection covers the early years of the Division of Student Affairs to the present.
