Scope and Contents
This collection has been processed into two series based upon History Department records and The Northern Great Plains History Conference. The Northern Great Plains
History Conference is further arranged into two sub-series. Sub-series one is based on the 1991 Conference. Sub-series two is based on the 1974 Conference. All series and sub-series are further arranged alphabetically.
History Department Records:
This series contains materials unique to the History Department from the 1960s-2000s. Items range from correspondence to committee and departmental meeting minutes.
Northern Great Plains History Conference:
This series contains information about the Northern Great Plains History Conference from 1970-1992. Items included in this series consist of correspondence, newspaper articles, and planning documents. This series has been divided up into two sub-series by the 1991 and 1974 conferences. This collection is further arranged alphabetically.
1991 Conference:
This series is based on the Northern Great Plains History Conference that was held in 1991. The 1991 Conference was held in Mankato, Minnesota.
1974 Conference:
This series is based on the Northern Great Plains History Conference that was held in 1974. The 1974 Conference was also held in Mankato, Minnesota.

Biographical / Historical
History courses have been taught since the founding of the Mankato State Normal School in 1868. The Courses were taught in order fulfill general studies requirements for prospective teachers. In 1938 the College reorganized into Divisions, and the History Department was placed in the Division of Social Studies. It was not until 1948-1949 academic year that students could Major in all disciplines of the Social Studies Division, which included History. During the 1955-1956 academic year the History Department began to offer some Graduate level classes, and in the early 1960s, Master of Arts and Master of Science Degrees were offered at Mankato State College. During the 1965-1966 academic year, the Social Studies Division was renamed the College of Arts and Sciences. During the1979-1980 academic year, the History Department moved to the newly formed College of Arts and Humanities. In 1994 the History Department was moved from the College of Arts and Humanities to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Today, the History Department remains under the College of Social and Behavioral Science, and continues to offer both Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees in History.

The Northern Great Plains History Conference was founded in 1965. Dr. Lass of Mankato State University was very active in the conference. The Conference rotates throughout the Mid-West. Its purpose is to give History Scholars a chance to present materials for discussion, and a chance for them to meet with other scholars, within the field of History, from across the country. Minnesota State University, Mankato remains active in the conference today.

Abstract
The History Department Collection consists of items from the History Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The collection is made up of correspondence, reports, studies, annual budgets, and departmental records. The collection also covers the Northern Great Plains History Conference from the 1970s and 1992, and Committee meetings that addressed topics that arose within the History Department.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection was donated by the Minnesota State University, Mankato History Department. The collection was delivered in three accessions. The first shipment came on March 20, 1985. The second shipment came on June 6, 1988. The third accession occurred in 2018.
