University Photograph Collection. Photographs, 1868-Ongoing

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSU Archives Collection 309

Scope and Contents

The University Photograph Collection consists of photographs taken on behalf of Minnesota State University, Mankato and its predecessor institutions. These photographs are pictures of students, faculty, buildings, sculptures on campus and the occasional regional location. Many of these photographs have been digitized, and can be found in ARCH: University Archives Digital Collections, https://arch.lib.mnsu.edu.

These photographs were taken by on-staff and contract photographers. Photographs were taken for a variety of reasons including university publications, documentation of campus events and activities, and construction.

This collection consists of three series:

Series 1, Digitized Photographs: These photographs have been digitized and added into ARCH: University Archives Digital Collections, https://arch.lib.mnsu.edu. Once digitized, the originals are maintained and are available in the University Archives.

Series 2, Semi-digitized Photographs: Not all photographs will be/have been digitized. In most cases, the best photographs in a set of similar photographs were chosen to be digitized. Originals of digitized photographs are physically separated into Series 1 and the similar photographs chosen not to be digitized are in this series.

Photograph sets include:

• Negatives: 1957-1968. The digitization of these negatives began in 2016 and is ongoing. The Archives also has an index to the negatives.

• Binders: 1970s-1994. The removal of photographs from these binders is in process and the inventory is continuously added to. Topics include sports pictures, different events held on campus, buildings, and miscellaneous photographs.

• Sports Photos: 1987-1988. These are mostly headshots of the players and are in index boxes in the archives.

• Faculty/Staff Photos: 1980s. These are headshots of the faculty and staff. Some of these photos are in the University Advancement Collection, while some of the head shots are in alphabetical order filed elsewhere. Most of these photos are scanned on demand and then filed online.

Series 3, Undigitized Photographs: These photographs have not been digitized.
